The Quiet Ritual of Caring for Your Jewellery

A reassuring, easy guide to cleaning, storing and loving your demi fine jewellery so it keeps its glow for years.

You slip off your earrings at the end of a long day and drop them on the nearest surface, half asleep, already thinking about tea. We know. It happens to everyone. But those little moments are where jewellery either lasts for years or quietly loses its shine. The good news? Looking after your pieces takes about two minutes, and it can feel like a small act of kindness to yourself.

What Your Jewellery Actually Wants

Demi fine pieces are made to be worn, not kept behind glass. They love your skin, your warmth, your everyday. What they don't love is a long list of things that sneak up on them: perfume, lotion, chlorine, sweat and sea water. None of it's dangerous, exactly. It just wears away the finish faster than you'd like.

Here's the simplest rule we know. Jewellery goes on last and comes off first. Spritz your perfume, smooth in your moisturiser, let everything settle, and only then reach for your pieces. At night, the order flips. Clasp undone, earrings out, rings off. Done.

Water, Perfume and Everything in Between

Showers, swims and workouts are the big three to think about. Take your pieces off before you step into the shower, and slip them into a small dish by the sink so they're easy to find. Heading to the beach? Leave your favourites at home and wear something you won't worry about. Your future self will thank you.

The Soft Cloth Method

Once a week, or whenever you remember, wipe each piece with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Gentle circles. No scrubbing. You're simply lifting away the day: skin oils, a dusting of powder, the faint film that settles on metal. If a piece needs a little more love, dampen the cloth with lukewarm water, wipe, then dry it completely straight away. Moisture left sitting is what causes trouble, so don't let it linger.

And skip the harsh stuff. No toothpaste, no abrasive polish, no ultrasonic gadgets unless you've checked first. Gentle always wins.

Where Your Pieces Sleep

Storage matters more than most of us think. Chains tangle, hoops scratch, and stones can scuff against one another when everything's tossed into the same drawer. Give each piece its own little home. A soft pouch. A lined box with tiny compartments. A ring roll tucked beside your passport for travel days.

Think about where you keep your jewellery, too. Bathrooms are humid, and humidity is no friend to metal. A cool, dry bedroom shelf is far kinder. Add a small silica sachet to your box if you live somewhere damp, and fasten each chain before you tuck it away so it doesn't knot while you sleep.

The earrings you wore to Diwali dinner. The bangles from last year's sangeet. The ring you bought yourself on a good day. They deserve a resting place that feels as thoughtful as the way you wear them.

A Little Check In Every Month

Once a month, pour yourself a cup of something warm and spend ten minutes with your jewellery box. Check the clasps. Tug gently on the chains. Look at the backs of your earrings and make sure everything still sits snug. Catching a loose catch early is the difference between a quick fix and a lost favourite.

Notice, too, which pieces you reach for most. They'll show a little more wear, and that's perfectly fine. It's proof of a life being lived in them. Jewellery that glows a bit softer where your fingers touch it often has a character no brand new piece can match.

You don't need a fancy kit or a perfect routine. You need a soft cloth, a gentle hand and a few minutes now and then. Care isn't a chore here. It's the quiet way you say these pieces matter, and so do you.
